Recruitment at College Chambers

The recruitment of able and committed barristers is fundamental to the continued success of College Chambers. We welcome applications from those with experience at the Bar. The majority of our recruitment is from those who have successfully completed twelve months pupillage with College Chambers.

The qualities we look for from a candidate are:

  • Academic achievement;
  • Integrity;
  • Empathy and the ability to communicate with clients;
  • An aptitude for advocacy.

Pupillage

Chambers takes a long-term view towards pupillage so as to guarantee our quality of service and enhance our reputation through the careful selection of future tenants. Our recruitment process reflects the high standards necessary to become a member of Chambers. We have a three-stage assessment process - written application, initial interview and finally a day-long assessment in Chambers.

Our pupils can expect a comprehensive range of work, excellent and intensive training, and a good level of funding. Each pupil is given a dedicated pupil supervisor who will provide the correct balance between tutoring and assessment.

During the second six months of pupillage, our pupils will have the opportunity to take on work in their own right, supported by the breadth and depth of knowledge from College Chambers and providing a solid foundation for development of practice beyond pupillage and into tenancy.

Applications for pupillage are now open. We are offering one pupillage commencing October 2016 and may also offer a pupillage commencing April 2016.  This is subject to available funding and a suitable candidate. Final decisions as to the number of pupillages offered, and the successful candidates will be made by 28 February 2016.

All applications should take the form of a typed letter (maximum 1 side of A4 and minimum font size 11), and curriculum vitae (maximum 2 sides of A4) and be sent to Louise Harvey, Head of Pupillage.  Applications by e-mail are NOT accepted.  The closing date is the 31st October.  You should ensure there are 3 copies of your letter and CV enclosed.  Please note it will be the applicant’s responsibility to show that their application was received by the closing date.

Applications will not be acknowledged upon receipt, but all candidates will be contacted by mid December to inform them as to the outcome of their application.

If you have previously applied for pupillage with College Chambers this must be highlighted in your application, and only those who can demonstrate a significant change in circumstances will be reconsidered.  Please ensure any changes are outlined in your covering letter.

College Chambers has 28 tenants and is a general common law set, with a particular emphasis on family law.  Full details of the work undertaken can be found on our website.  Applicants should be aware that very little criminal work is undertaken by members of Chambers.  Funding is by way of a grant of £6000 payable monthly during the First VI, and guaranteed earnings of a minimum of £6000 during the Second VI.

In addition, we are now required by the Bar Standards Board to undertake equality and diversity monitoring in respect of all pupillage applications.  We would therefore appreciate it if you could fill in the monitoring form found on the pupillage page of our website and submit this to us with your application.  Applicants can be assured that their applications are not processed by any member of the selection panel, and the equality and diversity form will be separated from their application immediately upon receipt.

Mini Pupillage

Mini-pupillage is a good way to spend time with barristers and watch them at work. It can help potential barristers to decide whether a career at the bar is for them and whether to apply for pupillage at a particular chambers.

College Chambers offers week-long mini-pupillages to suitable applicants who have embarked upon or completed their undergraduate studies. Mini-pupillage here is not assessed and is not a pre-requisite for a pupillage application.

Mini-pupils here can expect to see family and criminal work and perhaps other areas of law, and meet many Members of Chambers.

If you are interested, please apply with a covering letter and CV (which should include examination results for A-levels and beyond) to Sarah Henstock-Turner at College Chambers, 19 Carlton Crescent, Southampton, SO15 2ET or by email to shenstockturner@college-chambers.co.uk.

Tenancy

College Chambers tends to recruit from its current pupils but also welcomes tenancy applications from established practitioners.

Please apply to the Head of Chambers, Robin Belben, at College Chambers, 19 Carlton Crescent, Southampton, SO15 2ET.

All applications are treated in strictest confidence and in accordance with the Equality and Diversity Code for the Bar.

Equal Opportunities

College Chambers is fully committed to the Equality and Diversity Code for the Bar.

We are committed to recruiting pupils, tenants and staff entirely on merit irrespective of race, ethnic or national origin, nationality, citizenship, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, religion, political persuasion or disability (so far as the physical constraints of our premises permit). As regards disability, we will make reasonable adjustments for disabled applicants for pupillage and tenancy as regards the application process and will consider making reasonable adjustments to facilitate pupillage and/or practice as a tenant in the event of a successful application.
